Extreme conditions really do test the limits of a good design

Fysergo – HTDS has lots of experience in the functional design of ship bridges. Over the years, we have been involved from the beginning of the design phase of ship bridges for many different types of ship.

Variables like sailing properties, dimensions, user purpose and operating area have a major impact on the design requirements of ship and bridge. The expected operating conditions place huge functional demands on visibility, operability and maintainability. HTDS helps companies to make the right choices in this regard to ensure vessel and crew remain safe and sound.
With these interventions, HTDS guarantees optimum coordination between bridge resource management, human characteristics (cognitive and physical capacities and limitations) and working conditions on the bridge (operating area, type of ship and sailing properties).

Using the TUNASS® analysis, the operating philosophy is translated into:

  • The spatial layout of the bridge (relative position of consoles).
  • The sightlines (other shipping and critical deck positions, such as helicopter pad, pilot ladder and other operating points).
  • The console shape and dimensions in terms of accessibility, operability and readability of equipment, and of external visibility. Mock-up tests are included in this advice.
  • Software recommendations and interface design (radar and other displays).
